Nature in Action: Top Natural Attractions in Cagayan Valley

The Philippines is known for its natural splendor, pristine beaches, ragged terrain, untouched forests – the potential is astounding. Cagayan Valley is no different, the province is filled with mesmerizing caves, mountains and other natural attractions to boast of. This time I’ll walk you through the top natural attractions in the region, 2 from each province. Done packing your bags?

1. SABTANG ISLAND (Batanes)

The island has lots of natural attractions guaranteed to satisfy the most sophisticated nature lovers. It has intermittent white sand beaches with steep mountains and deep canyons with small level areas sporadically found along the coastline.

2. MOUNT IRAYA (Batanes)

Mt. Iraya is a dormant volcano standing at 1,517 meters whose last eruption was recorded in 505 AD. Mountaineering, trekking and trailblazing are recommended sports activities on the mountain.

3. PALAUI ISLAND (Cagayan)

Palaui Island in Sta. Ana, Cagayan is a paradise for the water sports and mountaineering activities. This untouched paradise has an approximate area of 3,850 hectares with a shoreline of 20.6 kilometers. Abundant in marine resources and home of different monkeys, wild pigs, deer, sea turtles and various endemic and migratory birds.

4. ODESSA-TUMBALI CAVE SYSTEM (Cagayan)

Alongside the Callao Cave System, there are other cave systems of note in Cagayan, one of those is the Odessa-Tumbali Cave System, whose local name is Abbenditan Cave is located at Sitio Abbenditan, Barangay Quibal in PeƱablanca. At 12.60 kilometers, it is currently the third longest cave in the Philippines. The cave is active, flood prone and provides excellent wet sport caving. It has superb formations and passage shapes, canals and lakes for swimming, photography and cave diving opportunities and varied fauna. Acknowledged to be a perfect cave system, it has five known entrances with potential to exceed its length to 15 kilometers.

5. DICOTCOTAN BEACH (Isabela)

Dicotcotan Beach boasts of a three-kilometer long beach with coral reefs, sea grass beds and sandy shoreline that is fringed with a coastal forest and a village. There are regular sightings here of pointed nosed dolphins and hump back whales aside from the various species of fish and shellfish, and marine turtles that can be seen from the surface.

6. FUYOT SPRINGS NATIONAL PARK (Isabela)

Situated in the suburbs of Sta. Victoria, City of Ilagan, Fuyot Springs National Park nestles a multitude of attractions guaranteed to satisfy adventurers.The park houses the Sta. Victoria Caves, which showcases more than 12 caves open for public spelunking. The caves feature formed lattices, stalactites, and stalagmites, a few of which have mineral deposits making them glimmer and shine when hit by light.

7. GOVERNOR RAPIDS (Quirino)

Governor Rapids is famous for its gigantic perpendicular walls of limestone jutting out from one side of the Cagayan River framing the Sierra Madre Mountain and its swift turbulent deep blue waters is perfect venue for kayaking, white river rafting, swimming and fishing. The riverside offers a suitable picnic ground with a magnificent view of the river.

8. BIMMAPOR ROCK FORMATION (Quirino)

Nagtipunan Town is the home of lush virgin forest and is being developed as a gateway to Aurora Province through Barangay Sangbay.It is also home to the famous rock formation called Bimmapor, a rock formation similar to  a ship’s stern which is about to sink. The area is recommended for rock climbing trekking, swimming, rafting, excursion and fishing, among others

9. CAPISAAN CAVE SYSTEM (Nueva Vizcaya)

Capisaan Cave System is the FIFTH longest cave in the country at 4.2 kilometers. Located  in Barangay Capisaan, Kasibu - it has layers of cave network including Lion  and Alayan Caves  with rare calcite formations and a subterranean river which doubles as a passageway to the best part of the cave.

10. MOUNT PULAG (Cagayan)

For more of an off-the-beaten-track excursion, you can hike your way through the beautiful Mt.Pulag via Ambaguio trail. Mt. Pulag is  a perfect eco-tourism destination and is home to the pitcher plant, giant cloud rat and whiskered pitta.
